New Resolutions for the New Year 2013!

Oh blog world I have missed you! We are finally getting over the plague and holiday rush plus sleep training and I hope to be back to semi-regular posts. So much I want to blurt out to the world...that coming up this week.

Every year I like to go over the resolutions from the year before and see how I did and then make some new ones. I like to look at them as not only resolutions but almost like a mini business and life plans.

To look back here are my past lists:
List from 2010
List from 2011
List from 2012

List from 2012:
Non-blog centered:
  • Baby-proof the house now that mr. bee is starting to cruse around the house. (Ummm yeah we probably still have more to do now that squirrel is around.)
  • Work on cleaning and cooking regularly- setting up a meal plan and cleaning schedule. Also clean out stuff we do not need! Simplify! Well I am cleaning out but no meal planning yet. Cooking is happening more, cleaning....not yet.
  • Getting our budget set and look into CSA's for produce. Umm budget is ready to be set and I know what CSA to go with...does that count?
  • As always make family a first priority, spend more time with my husband and do things for him without asking and to take care of my son without feeling like anyone owes me. I would say DONE to this one....staying home from work helps.
  • Try to go to the gym at least once a week if not more. HA ok that never happened
Blog/business centered:
  • Continue to post new items on Etsy DONE
  • Sign up to do more craft shows and have my items in more local boutiques. DONE
  • Be better about time management when I get time to work at night. DONE
  • Work hard to have more back stock items. still working on this
  • Continue to post three times a week and maybe try to add a post that is more personal or links up to other blogs. DONE most of the time
  • Look into other blogs/shops to do giveaways with, either giving away my item or asking to giveaway theirs. DONE
  • Promote my blog and maybe start linking up with other blogs to promote my business. Looking into this but I have started linking up for personal stuff not for the business yet
  • Look into adds on my page to bring in a bit of income. I thought about this but have yet to take the plunge, any thoughts?
Once again why am I so driven with the business goals and not the personal ones?! There is always next year.

Image from here

So here is to a new year and new goals!

Non-blog centered:
  • Test out some babysitters so the hubby and I can have regular date nights.
  • Work each day on cleaning and cooking. I have to always have this because I hate to cook. Cleaning I don't hate but it is harder to do when someone is always needing me.
  • FINALLY get the budget set and live by it. No more buying things because they sound cool or I would like to have them.
  • Clean out my clothes and work on my wardrobe (I want to still look and feel good about myself while staying at home, no lounging in pjs all day).
  • Enjoy life as a stay at home mom. Enjoy playing with my kiddos, sometimes I think too much about tasks that need to be done and how they are in my way instead of enjoying the time I get to spend with them while they love me.
  • Try to get to the gym ONCE a month. Sad but that is the best I can do and we will see if I can do it.
  • Spend more time in personal prayer, reading a religious book or just taking 15min to talk to God. This should really be up at the top!
Blog/business centered:
  • Continue to post new items on Etsy
  • Be better about time management when I get time to work.
  • Start making all of the things I keep talking about making....DO IT.
  • Continue to post at least three times a week and work on my photography skills.
  • Promote my blog and maybe start linking up with other blogs to promote my business. Maybe doing a few "how did I" segments.
  • Look into adds on my page to bring in a bit of income.
  • Interact more with my peeps on Facebook.
  • Silly but make a map with all of the locations that I have sent my items too. I would love that as inspiration when I work.

I love having a place on the internet tonshare what I create and share small parts of myself with those who check it out. It gives me something to look forward to on hard days with the kiddos, someone to "talk to". Thank you for being there for me, even if it my just be my two good friends who check this out every once in a while.

May God Bless all of you in 2013.

What I Wore Sunday #3

What I Wore Sunday linkup
The plague has left our house and I am feeling better finally (I didn't make it to Mass last Sunday I was so sick). I pulled this outfit together and thought I looked pretty good until I looked at the picture. Yikes, baggy city!

I started out with this dress that has a low cut front, easy for breastfeeding, and layered a halftee (sort of like the new updated version of a dickey) under it to make it wearable outside of my house. I thought some grey tights would be cute under it, do you see them peeking out between the dress and boots? I put on my go to black boots to finish off the look. The dress is 3/4 length and I thought I would be cold so I put on this grey and black stripe sweater to pull the tights together with the dress. I don't mind the way the sweater looks but man doesn't it look like I am wearing a bag? :)

I went shopping a few weeks ago (at Target) and got some new skirts that I can not wait to wear in the coming weeks. First I have to find some tops to go with them.

Shirt: Halftees (LOVE THEM)
Dress: Old Navy Maternity, I think
Sweater: Gordmans?
Tights: ?? No idea
Boots: Way old from a store called Syms. Long gone

A Slew of Monkees

You have seen this design before but I wanted to show you all of the variations people have asked for.

First of all there is one that just didn't get enough ink, and got a spot on it as well from the ironing cloth. GRR. It is for sale 1/2 off on my Etsy site. It doesn't look too bad, maybe a little bit vintage?

Here is what it looked like after I did it a second time, much better! Sometimes those small onesies are hard to get the image on correctly.

Then I had an order for a brother and sister. The grandmother wanted red for the boy and purple for the girl. These were done on children's tee-shirts. They actually turned out pretty good.

It seems like there are quite a few Monkees fans out there! I have noticed on the non-cable tv station that plays old tv shows that they have been playing old Monkees re-runs. Sometimes I sit and watch but most of the time I flip to KETC or THIS (old movie channel).

Dreaming up new retro designs this week, some being care bears, and rainbow bright. We will see what I can come up with.

Embroidery for Stockings

We are only a few weeks away from Christmas and I actually have a Christmas related project. Earlier in the summer I embroidered these six stockings for a client. We went with a smaller font because we had to fit a name between two stars on one of the blue stockings. I used the same font size for the rest of the stockings so that was the determining stocking. I used a few different colored threads, the dark blue stockings have white, the two stockings that have an aqua blue on them I used aqua and for the final two stockings I used a navy blue. The stocking colors were taken from that sweet blue and white nativity on the mantel.

Here is a closer shot of the embroidery, looking back I wish I could have made the names bigger but I think they are happy.

Then this client told a friend that I had done her stockings so I embroidered this family's stockings a month ago. She wanted the names large across the top of the stockings and we played with the font a bit until we got what she wanted. She was thinking of doing green on the red and red on the green but white thread looks much better. Stands out and unifies them.

These stockings had two layers and I had a hard time getting them to not pucker when I was sewing. I started and stopped a ton of times but couldn't get it to not pucker. I have a great machine that was expensive but it isn't as great as those really expensive machines.

One day I would love to have a fireplace and mantel to hang our stockings from, we don't have anything like that now so we have to hang them from the tv cabinet. HA I guess we could play the fireplace vhs that they used to have so that it looks like the tv is a fireplace. I also have not purchased stockings for my two kiddos and my husband uses an old stocking that we had left over at work. I need to figure out what to get. I love my crochet stocking from when I was a kid but I don't know who I would have do it. I could get more stockings like my husband but they are expensive! I do know that I want them all to match so maybe I can make my own. All I know for sure is that it will not be happening by Christmas. ;) Good thing they are too young to know any better.

What I Wore Sunday #2

What I Wore Sunday linkup
Today is Gaudete Sunday and in honor of that I wanted to try to find something pink to wear to Mass. Let's see how I did...
Finding an outfit that is breastfeeding friendly in my closet is sometimes a challenge. I only have so many pink items of clothing so I started out with this button up shirt that was actually my mom's shirt! I paired that with brown slacks and because I thought I would be chilly I put on a brown sweater. It worked well for nursing during mass. I also have these awesome silver shoes with big pink flowers on them that were perfect to go with my outfit.

I didn't feel like I had enough pink on so I wore my pink jacket and finished off the outer wear with a ruffle scarf (I make some scarves just like this one).  Not my favorite outfit but I think it worked for what I was going for and I felt festive in my pink!

Scarf: Gift from France
Necklace: Bridesmaid gift from a friend
Shirt: Vintage from Mom
Sweater: NY and Co
Pants: Old Navy
Shoes: Clarks

Finally, I just today read about what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary school and was so sad to think about all of those little ones, not much older than some of my nieces and nephews and my own children. I think today, on the Sunday meant to give us hope, I have hope and am glad that this world is not all that is meant for us in life.

7 Quick Takes #2

7 quick takes sm1 7 Quick Takes Friday (vol. 198)

1. I am sure you have heard but Pantone announced the color of the year for 2013, it is Emerald. I used to love the color green, and even my High School colors were green and white. I am excited  to add some green to my life this year. It might be an easier color for people to embrace than Tangerine Tango.

PANTONE COLOR OF THE YEAR 2013 - Emerald 17-5641

2. My baby squirrel (3 month old) is getting his first tooth. This makes for a cranky baby that cries himself to sleep even when being held, rocked, and shushed. I hope that this first tooth pops in pretty quickly. Baby bee got his first tooth at this same time and rumor has it that my aunt had 6 teeth by 6 months old! WOW It seems to run in the family.

3. Advent is underway and going much faster that I would like it to. I mean really is it really almost Gaudete Sunday!? I always loved the "pink candle Sunday" as a kid because it meant that Santa was almost on his way. This year it is a reminder to me to keep preparing for Christ to come in a few weeks. I have been doing very simple things this year for advent,  making the most of the time I am given each day, not yelling at my children when I am having a hard day, and doing what I can to have a meal ready when my hubby comes home (this is big for me I HATE TO COOK). ;) I am doing okay but am glad I have a few more weeks to work on these things, and to prepare my heart for Christ.

4. While cleaning my kitchen for the first time in a long time, I mean really cleaning it I remembered that I bought some Mr. Clean pads at the store a few months ago and decided to get one out. Man I should have pulled them out a while ago! They are great! I actually remember seeing on Pinterest a way to make your own?!  I am going to have to go check that out again and see what that is all about. I might have a new favorite cleaning tool.

5. While I sew sew sew to get Etsy orders out I like to watch movies. I went to the library last week and picked up a few for the week. I love old movies, romance movies, (I watch action and sci-fi with my husband) and comedies. So I picked up this movie that I thought for sure was going to be stupid and I really should have left at the library but I didn't. It was What to Expect When You are Expecting. Yes a movie based on the book. It wasn't the best movie but what I got from it was that I love my babies, I am proud of myself for getting through three pregnancies and two natural births, and I want to have more. :) I proceeded to tell my husband while he was asleep, lets have like 10 kids...his response was okay. haha

6. Went to the first Christmas party of the season last night and it was a lot of fun. I forget how great it is to gather with those that you know and love and to eat, drink and share your lives with them. Plus bee loved running around with all of the other little kiddos. That was the best, seeing him just step away from us and go, most of the time he wants us to go with him. I look forward to the next few gatherings that are coming up and hope that we all stay well so we can enjoy them.

7. Finally at seven....well this Christmas selling season as been a good one for me on Etsy. Constant orders and all of them custom. I love creating things for people that help them say "I am pregnant," "I love you," or just "I thought of you when I saw this." I am not the best gift giver but I love helping other people create presents and surprises for others. Now to finish my Christmas gifts and get everything wrapped. Only ten more days! WOW.

New Fabric/New Find Friday #118

This fabric has been in my stash and I am sorry I haven't shared it with you yet. I love Amy Butler fabric, and sadly I just buy it and keep it and hate cutting into it. A few months ago I picked this up at my local quilt shop when they were having a sale.
These are the new colors of the year, first of all grey has been big for a while and it doesn't seem like it is going away yet. It has become a great neutral to go with so many colors and patterns. I used to hate it but now (thanks to my grey loving husband) it is the color of my son's room! The green colors in the bottom two are not quite emerald green but they are close. These blue, turquoise, green colors are sliding their way to the new color of the year emerald.
The top two fabrics are such soft florals that would really make a beautiful skirts but would be even better as a breastfeeding cover, maybe I will make an exception and cut into them in the future. The middle fabric, the snail pattern  is not from Amy but I thought it was so cute, perfect for a little kiddo. Maybe a pair of kids pajama pants? The last two fabrics I just love the colors,  bold strong grey and green with pops of fresh blue.

I hope to get sewing a bit more now that my Christmas orders are over so be on the lookout for more posts with new products!

{pretty, happy, funny, real} #1

round button chicken

I think it is going to take me a few weeks to get used to this and come up with some great pictures for this edition. I don't have my camera out that much but really should...and capture all of the fun, happy, real moments of our lives. So here goes nothing....PHFR try number one.

This is the basement

Pretty: Here is a quick picture of the basement before all of the muddy flood of 2012 happened. It was great, we only got to enjoy it for almost exactly 6 months.

Happy: This is how the floor looked after the tiles were pulled up....mud over the entire floor. We were afraid we would have a hard time cleaning it up but check it out, I cleaned it with a mop, who knew. You see how clean that top side of the floor looks!? Makes the muddy side look nasty and that it was. We were so happy we didn't have to hire someone to clean it and that it only took me three days to clean it up.

Funny: Ok so this isn't as much funny haha as it is funny I want to cry funny. Like I said almost exactly six months after we finished the basement this happened...our muddy flood. I wish it was a video so you can see that muddy water at the bottom right of the picture FLOWING across our new basement floor. ICK Touching everything, everything muddy. :(

Real: And here is a real picture of how my sewing area looks today. Real. Messy. Productive. LOVE IT! The floor came clean, the tiles came clean, the rugs came clean we moved stuff back and are in the process of organizing. I am back in action in my sewing area and you can't tell but I have 10 orders in process all over my sewing table. I also have a stack of fabric ready to be made into taggie blankets. Look out sewing machine and Etsy here I come. BTW the rest of the basement is still in as much of a messy transition as this area, still need to get some shelves a good cleaning and put toys away etc., but man are we happy and loving the real mess because it is in the basement where it is meant to be. Where we can shut the door and go up to a clean upstairs.

Ok well that actually was a lot of fun. I am sure in the future I will have more pictures of my personal life on here. That might break up the million posts I have with breastfeeding covers.

Pink Lady

This breastfeeding cover was created quite a few months ago....could it have been 9 months or more? WOW! I am a bit behind on the blog posts but hope to catch up pretty quickly. This cover was ordered by a friend who just had her third baby girl. I gave her some patterns to choose from and this is what she picked.

When I look at this cover, pink with a dark damask pattern all over it, I realize that the fabric reminds me of her. She is very traditional with feminine qualities to her and this fabric feels traditional in pattern but the colors feel fresh and feminine. She has red-ish hair and I always like how redheads look with pink on. :) I hope she put this cover to good use and I was so honored that she would ask me to make one for her.

I have a ton of fabric cut and ready to go to make more nursing covers and I hope that in the next few months to make a few and finally sell them at Kangaroo Kids in town...if they will still have me.

Mizzou Twins

A few months ago I had someone ask me to make a custom set of Mizzou onesies for a friend of theirs who is a Mizzou fan and was having twins. I am a Mizzou alumni so I was excited to create something for them.

So for their set we did the letters in black, MIZ on one and ZOU on the other. Sewn with yellow thread.

Another client wanted a set but with gold letters. So this is what their set looked like with black thread.

Both sets have these mizzou fabric paw prints on the bottom. It is hard to get the two to match but I like how they are a little bit different but from the same fabric.

I have a done some onesies with a mizzou tie on the front out of this fabric but I think it would be really fun to also put the paw print on the bottom of the onesie.

What I Wore Sunday #1

What I Wore Sunday linkup

Well I am not always fashionable and I might wear the same thing every week to Mass on Sunday but I thought it would be fun to participate when I can in this link up. I love fashion, I don't always dress like it or have the guts or money to buy what I want, but I try. Not only that but I really feel that modesty needs to be brought back to young ladies and I love that these bloggers are trying to do that.

Here goes nothing!

It was a bit chilly and I didn't have much time to think so I put on this denim skirt which is much cuter in person, a white tank (nursing ready), and this maternity/nursing shirt that a friend of mine made me. I love it but realized after looking at this picture that it might make me look like I am still pregnant. :) Oh well. To top off the look I have my brown cowboy boots (they have bling you just can't see it), I love them with this and another white skirt I have...you might see that in the coming months.

Necklace: The vintage pearl
Shirt: Lynn from ada b & me
Tank: glamourmama
Skirt: christa taylor (on-line store out of business)
Boots: A local outlet manufacturer

7 Quick Takes #1

7 quick takes sm1 7 Quick Takes Friday (vol. 198)

1 Well I would like to start blogging a bit more and this is one of the few ways I am going to kick my rear into gear. Look for more personal posts from me and check out the other side of "Jules"= faith, fashion, and photography (ahem..still learning).

2. I am really excited about doing this quick takes Friday but I have a regular Friday post...my New Fabric/New Find Friday. I don't want to give that up because I am always buying new fabric and love to show them off. SO do I post this 7 QT's on Friday along with my other post...or even Saturday!? humm

3. Maybe I am doing this instead of cleaning or cooking because I am now a stay at home mom and wanted to do something to connect to the blogging world that I sit up and read every night while feeding baby Squirrel (our baby's nickname, not a real squirrel). Or maybe I do need adult interaction and this is my way of feeling like my adult voice is heard. Not sure.

4. I told you our basement flooded right? Well it did and we finally cleaned it up and moved everything back down there....whew. I feel like our life has been out of sorts for a long time, but it has only been since July. I hope to share pictures soon of the crazy mess we had to clean up. This is the second time I brought home a newborn to a disaster of a house. Dirty, messy, house! Well by the 1st of the year we will be CLEAN for once and put back together! Yahoo.

5. Who DIDN'T hear about Prince William and Kate expecting?! I was so excited when I heard this the other day and can not wait to hear what they are having, naming the baby, and how her pregnancy goes. Too bad she doesn't have a blog where she talks about how she is doing and posts pictures. Then again I didn't do that with my two pregnancies did I. :)

6. Advent...it is here. What are we doing for advent? My husband is giving up listening to the radio while working. That is very hard for him, but I am making him listen to Christmas music when he gets home at night. I have no idea what to do yet. Any thoughts? What are you doing? I know this is broad but maybe make better use of my day. Spend less time just looking up useless stuff on the internet and add some prayer time in with the playing, cooking, sewing, feeding, walking, driving, sleeping time. Yeah adding prayer is always a good thing.

7. Wow we are to number seven already? Well I would love to post a picture but I have gone over my blogger picture limit so now I have to start resizing my images before posting them, or start paying for more memory. Ick. Maybe I should move my blog to another server? No that sounds like way too much work. I hope to have at least one picture next time....it was just too much for me to do this time.

New Fabric/New Find Friday #117

This post has been a long time coming. I participated in my second Exclusively by Mommy event in July and below I wanted to tell you about the other great vendors that were there. Please check them out, always great to support other local mommy run businesses.

The third Exclusively by Mommy event at Cotton Babies is tomorrow!! Click on the banner above to see the other great Mommy's that will be joining me then.

Back to who was there in July...
The first one is Hanley Fold Farm, Anne is a personal friend of mine and I LOVE her soaps, lotion bars, and chap stick. I have to say that we use the lotion bar and chap stick more than her soap but I would totally recommend her products to anyone. Check out her website to see what local farmer's market you can find her product this weekend!

This woman's company is called Hold it Right There Bags you can find her on Etsy HERE. She has beautiful bags and purse organizers. I also love her logo and business name. The shoulder bags are my favorite.

This Mother and Daughter team called Banded By Beauty have the cutest girl hair items. I wish I had had a girl so that I could buy some. Check them out on Etsy HERE. Their mission statement and use of vintage items is so cool.

Last but not least there was probably the most seasoned crafter, Lee Lynn Crafts. She makes a wide variety of personalized items. Love her jewelry, so awesome! She is also a friend of a friend and is such a nice woman. I am so glad that I finally got to meet her.

Finally I did take a picture of my both this time...here it is. I am planning a different booth set up this time, more ways to hang my items. I realized this time that I really need to hang things for people to see them.

I will be there again tomorrow Saturday the 8th if you would like to join me!

Third Try At a Quilt

I have only made two quilts in my life and the second one I still haven't finished (just have to bind it). Why I just can't get it done I don't know. I bought these great animal fabrics for baby bee when he was born and I have some extra after using it where I wanted to so I decided he needs a quilt for his twin bed! He isn't in a twin bed yet which gives me some time to make it. Hopefully I finish it before he needs it. ;)

Here are all of the patterned fabrics that I am using and then I am using solid colors to coordinate. Blue, orange, brown, and green. I cut it up and used a modified pattern I found on a wonderful blog called Film in the Fridge. She has the best, most inspiring modern quilts, and I love how she plays with color and shapes.

I put them together and numbered the rows so that I can sew them together, never know what happens between first lay out and sewing. This is what the front will look like and the back will be a solid color with a few patches of these fabrics. I started sewing the rows and good thing I didn't sew the whole front together because now that we have baby squirrel I am going to take this quilt from one to two! I want them to have matching quilts to go on their new bunk beds that are going in bee's room. So in that case I need your help! I need to figure out what color "sashing" to put in between the colorful rows. It will be a solid color stripe that runs between the rows and will hopefully allow me to take half of the rows to make a second quilt.

That is where you come in, my readers...what color should I use? I was thinking, grey, or white to balance out all of the bold colors. Any thoughts? I think whatever I use for the sashing I will also use for the back of the quilt. Look at yesterday's post to see what the room looks like, that might help in making a decision. Eeek I might just have to wait until the rows are sewn and then lay them out with different colors to see what will work best. I would love to hear what you think.

Bee's New Room

So now that baby bee is finally in his new room and his little brother, squirrel, is in bee's old room it is time for the room reveal.

Let's go back...back to when I bought the house. Here are some pictures of the room back then, white walls, drapery, and wood floors. Perfect for Grandma to come and stay.

Here is a picture of the room during demo. We knocked out part of the wall to open up the closet. The closet went back behind the wall and was hard to get things out of that back corner so we opened the doorway up and put a sliding mirrored doors there instead.
Here is a great picture of after...back then. This was designed and lived in by my roommate at the time. When she left it stayed this same color and I just put a rug down on the floor to help with warmth.
I wasn't planning on changing it until kids moved in that room and we picked a new color to put on the walls. How could I guess that I was going to have two boys! I totally wanted to paint the room purple. ;)
Well I guess the closest thing to purple for a boy is grey, and that is another color that we do not have in the house already so we painted the room grey. Here you see the new blinds we put up to go with the rest of the house. If you look on the floor you see the rug that went with the old decor.
I know it is hard to tell but see those paint samples on the wall? Those are the color that we ended up going with. The walls in these pictures are just primed with a grey tinted primer. Of course since the new rug didn't go with the wall color we went with a different rug, one that would go with the fabrics that were in bee's baby room that I am carrying over into his big boy room.

Here is the room finished, mostly. Grey walls, grey and brightly colored rug, bunk beds (soon to come where the bed and mattresses are in the bottom pictures), a crib, a reading bench with cushion (soon to come) in front of the window. Don't mind the stickers on that dresser (thanks daddy) that dresser will one day be painted white and have new hardware put on them. That used to live in our bedroom and now that it is a kids bedroom our room feels more grownup in our room. Daddy got a new armoire for his side of the room and he loves it. It houses all of his clothes which frees the closet up for me! BONUS.
Another view of the room, I am sorry these are bad angles, the room is TINY. Below is a bad picture of the sliding closet doors. On one of the doors I put a vinyl growth chart so I can track how tall they are getting. I haven't marked any yet but I hope to soon. I keep that door closed because someone likes to pick off the vinyl! EEKK

We have yet to hang pictures and drapery but that will all come in the coming months. Stay tuned for Wednesday when I talk about the bedding that I am making for the bunk beds.

I have the shop closed right now as we are moving things around in our house but it will be up again soon so like me and asked to be notified when I return!

Good Luck!
